Question:  I want to build a garage and plan to use the attic for storage.  What should I take into consideration as I plan my garage?

Answer: Standard garage trusses will allow you to store some items but the webbing in the trusses makes it difficult to get items up and down from the attic. You can have special trusses made which have the center more open so it’s easier to access your items. These trusses are also engineered to accommodate more weight.

You could also design your garage and build it with clear span ceiling joists and common rafters.  This will allow for the complete attic area to be open for storage.  Decide how much the additional storage area is worth to you because the more storage area you gain the more expensive the project becomes.
