Question: We want to add an addition to our home and finances are very limited. We need to make sure that our addition is completed at the contract price. How should we proceed?
Answer: Make sure you share with your remodeling contractor your situation and how important it is for the project to come in at the contract price. Check every detail of your contract documents to make sure that you and the contractor have communicated correctly so that every item is included in the contract documents. List every outlet, light, trim detail and any other specifics so that there will be no questions. Make sure you have picked the exact finishes, flooring selections, cabinet styles so that the prices are already in the quote. Don’t start until all the selections are in the specifications. Ask friends who they suggest as a contractor and if their contractor came in at the contract price. No matter how thorough you are, if you add something to the project, the price is going to go up, so make sure you are prepared to live with your decisions. One other option, you could sign the contract with a little cushion just in case you must or decide to make a change. Start early and take your time so that you will be satisfied with your finished project.
