Question: Why should I use low or no VOC paints?
Answer: VOC stands for volatile organic compounds and are essentially the fumes you smell in a freshly painted room. These fumes have been linked to respiratory problems in adults and children and ozone pollution. These can also affect your pets. The EPA has even pegged some of the painting VOCs as being possibly cancer-causing. Thus we try to limit VOCs.
We use Sherwin Williams Duration because it is the most durable and easy to use paint that we have experienced and it is low VOC. It also meets Sherwin Williams’ Greensure Designation. Sherwin Williams’ Greensure Designation is an internal recognition focusing on sustainability, durability and wash ability.
Sherwin Williams has a paint line called Harmony which has no VOCs or very low VOCs depending on the tint. Harmony is Greenguard Children and School Certified, meaning this product can be used where indoor air quality is at its most crucial use as in schools, daycares and hospitals.
Each person has to determine how important this issue is and then select their paint accordingly. We find with Duration paint your project will look the best and last the longest. Thus the less often you paint the fewer VOCs are omitted.
