Question: We are thinking about having an addition built and would like to know how best to prepare for the meeting with our contractor. How should we prepare for this meeting?
Answer: This is a great question and the better you are prepared for this meeting the smoother the remodeling process will proceed. It is very helpful to have all your thoughts put down in writing. Make a prioritized list of what you want to accomplish and how much you wish to invest. Detail how the addition will be used, how big you would like it, what design features you desire, where do you want outlets and lighting, what style of flooring and the list is endless. Keep a scrap book of pictures from magazine or other homes you’ve seen that show colors, styles, furniture, window treatments, landscaping and any other features that you would like to capture in your new space. Be prepared to answer many questions so the contractor can help you discover the best selections for your tastes.
Each family is different with some having detailed ideas for every question and others just a short list of ideas. A good remodeler will work with what you provide and design the quality space you desire. Be patient. The planning and designing time will be time well spent since the better you are prepared, the easier the process will be.
