Question: We’ve heard that remodeling projects often drag on and on beyond the original time line. We have a hard deadline, by which our project must be done, is this a reasonable request?
Answer: I believe this is a reasonable request but you must be perfectly clear to explain your requirements and time line to the contractor of your choice. Given the proper information a quality contractor will be able to develop a time line and confirm an on time completion.
Many factors go into completing a project on time, so let me just list a few. You must allow adequate time to develop designs, make selections, order and receive special and long lead-time items, submit paper work for permits and inspections, cover possible weather delays, and schedule inspections as needed.
Thus it is important to select a contractor who will be diligent to follow through on all the details that are required to make the process move along efficiently and smoothly. Your best way to know whether your contractor is reliable is to ask for referrals and verify that they have done what they said before in a timely and professional manner.
Even if every precaution is taken with impeccable precision and professionalism there is always the chance that something could disrupt the plans. An example is a special order item that may come in on time but arrive damaged or you just don’t like it. This situation does happen and makes completion as per specifications more difficult. While this is not the contractor’s fault, it still makes completion contingent upon acquiring replacement item. It is also important to remember that additional work added to the project generally adds time to completion.
My advice is to begin planning your project as soon as you can. This will give you time to make your decisions in a relaxed thoughtful manner and allow you to enjoy an exceptional remodeling experience.
